PIERRE TRUDEAU MEMORIAL DEBATE
Every year a Pierre Trudeau Memorial Debate is organized to help popularize Canada’s socio-economic, political and cultural environment among the youth in the country. The increasing popularity of the Debate, open exclusively for the undergraduate students of the University of Delhi, clearly shows that the Centre has been particularly successful in promoting interest in Canadian Studies in the University of Delhi.
The 2nd Pierre Trudeau Memorial Debate on “In the Opinion of the House there is nothing that can learn from 5000-year old Multi-ethnic, Linguistic and Cultural Diversity of India” was organized on November 8, 2002. Seven teams from different colleges of University of Delhi participated in the debate and Shri Ram College of Commerce won the Trudeau Memorial Shield.
The 3 rd annual Pierre Trudeau Memorial Debate on “In the Opinion of the House Canada and India should Strive for Borderless World Trade System” was organized on November 7, 2003. Ten teams from different colleges of University of Delhi participated in the debate and Sri Venkateswara College won the Trudeau Memorial Shield.
The 4 th annual Pierre Trudeau Memorial Debate was held on March 10, 2005 on “In the Opinion of the House India has little to learn from Canada with regard to Corporate Social Responsibility.” Seven teams from different colleges of University of Delhi participated in the debate and Lady Shri Ram College won the Trudeau Memorial Shield.
The 5 th annual Pierre Trudeau Memorial Debate was held on February 14, 2006 on the topic “In the Opinion of the House Technological Progress has ruined Society in Canada and India.” In the debate, eleven colleges of the University of Delhi participated and Sri Venkateswara College won the Trudeau Memorial Shield.
The 6 th annual Pierre Trudeau Memorial Debate was held on February 20, 2007 on the topic “In the Opinion of the House, With the Himalayas and Canada’s North Melting, India and Canada should band together to fight Climate Change.” Out of the seven colleges of the University of Delhi that had confirmed for participation, five colleges participated in the debate by sending their teams for the competition. Hindu College won the Trudeau Memorial shield.
The 7 th annual Pierre Trudeau Memorial Debate was held on February 26, 2008 on the topic “In the Opinion of the House, India has Something to learn from Canada’s Liberal Economic Policies.” Seven colleges of the University of Delhi participated in the debate by sending their teams for participation and Sri Venkateswara College won the Trudeau Memorial Shield.
The 8 th Pierre Trudeau Memorial Debate was held on February 25, 2009 on the topic “In the Opinion of the House, Rise in Fundamentalism is a Sure Sign that a melting-pot approach is preferable to a Multicultural one.” Out of six colleges that participated, Lady Shri Ram College won the Trudeau Memorial Shield.
The 9 th Pierre Trudeau Memorial Debate was held on February 19, 2010 on the topic “In the Opinion of the House, The Signing of a Nuclear Co-operation agreement between Canada and India should have a significant impact on the bilateral relationship between the two countries.” Eleven colleges of the University of Delhi participated in the debate and Kirori Mal College won the Trudeau Memorial Shield.
